Marley Family Seaweeds

We’ve transitioned from our commercial harvesting operation to one of the best Foraging Tours in the nation; featured in the Los Angeles Times, Martha Stewart Living, Lonely Planet’s Top 6 Foraging Tours in the US, and more.

I love taking people out and showing them the intertidal region and seaweed harvesting.

It’s an ancient activity that gets us back to our nature as hunter/gatherers without all of the environmental and moral quandries of hunting or fishing. We talk about sustainable and respectful harvest and the preservation of this crucial resource.

It is my utmost hope that after one of our sea foraging tours, you will be able to.

A) Identify at least 5 species of edible marine algae. Many of these can be found worldwide.

B) Learn about the history of Asian-American seaweed harvesters in California who founded this industry

C) Incorporate the use of freshly harvested seaweed in a myriad of international cuisines

D) How to preserve your seaweeds by using traditional methods

ABOUT MARLEY FAMILY SEAWEEDS

Founder Spencer Marley is passionate about local seafood and has worked upon the waters of San Luis Obispo County in several positions for the past 15 years, from being the aquaculture foreman of the Morro Bay Oyster Company, harvesting wild salmon commercially, to working as an engineer on oil spill response ships. He now works shoreside at his alma mater Cal Poly, SLO and spends his free time scouring the tidepools of San Simeon and Big Sur for the finest culinary species of Pacific wakame, nori and kombu. Always on the cutting edge, we are also harvesting some amazing local varieties such as Olive Rockweed, Grapestone and Sea Lettuce.

Marley Family Seaweeds tours will teach you how to seaweed forage for a lifetime.
